Regroup

When I started this blog, I was a third semester graduate student in
Syracuse University's School of Information Studies and half-way through an MS in Library and Information Science -- via the Web, or as we say at e-Syracuse, ISDP (Independent Study Distance Program,) a 21st century high-tech program that beats any other distance education program around.

I love the program but when SU went up on tuition (an annual event) to close to $1000 per credit hour (tuition/fees), it was too much for my summer school pocketbook. So, last April, I decided to step back and look at programs -- not necessarily library science -- closer to literal home and with cheaper tuition.

I applied to University of North Carolina at Greeensboro (UNCG) and got accepted into their Masters in Liberal Studies (MALS) program. This doesn't mean that I've quit my Syracuse degree; I properly parked the MSLIS ISDP pursuit for this summer and the coming academic year.

There were other reasons besides cost of attendance (total estimate $30,000 per year)to park the SU degree: my books are bubbling again. Some people know that I've been working on a couple of books (and a criticism theory) for the past decade and most people are tired of hearing my usual, "Sorry, can't go out with you this weekend; I'm working on my books."

True as usual; more so this time than ever before. As luck has it, UNCG's MALS degree can be completed via the Web, too, and the MALS folks accepted me knowing that I was coming in looking for a program that can co-exist with two book projects and a congealing theory.

So. That's the news. Fortunately, I'm still able to communicate with my Syracuse classmates via several electronic avenues, this blog being one of many.
